Chris Appleton is to thank for the most important hair trends of the last two years. He’s responsible for Ariana Grande’s ripped pony, created J Lo’s iconic Superbowl waves, made Dua Lipa blonde for one night, and is behind too many iconic Kim K hair moments to count. It goes without saying that the man knows about beautiful hair.
But he also knows a thing or two about skin. Today, Appleton has her anti-aging routine locked down, but it wasn’t always that way. “Skincare is great for men because traditionally we’re taught that if you use products as a man it’s ‘girly’ and you should only use soap and water because that’s the male thing to do,” he says. Charm. “Obviously I quickly realized that it didn’t work for youthful looking skin. Men were brought up with this conception that you shouldn’t use a lot of products, so I think it’s really a change from our days. Now it’s become normal to use products, and it’s really good to take care of your skin.”
Appleton is no stranger to taking care of his skin, and he’s come a long way in doing so. In his twenties, he dealt with severe acne and took Accutane three times. He also had to completely reassess his skin after moving from London to Los Angeles in his thirties. “I really noticed a big difference in the sun damage to my skin,” he says. “I guess at 30, too, your skin changes. You’re not 20 anymore. It doesn’t just come back.
Fortunately, he has his good friend, dermatologist Dr. Jason Diamond, MD, on call for any questions. “I will always ask her about sun damage, or even how to care for your skin on a daily basis.” Diamond also gives Appleton a Clear + Brilliant facial from time to time to avoid breakouts.
But really, it all comes down to her routine at home. “A lot of people think I don’t look my age,” he says. “I take care of my skin and use good products, but I think I’m very consistent, very persistent with them. Men need to take care of their skin, it doesn’t matter if you’re a man, a woman , whatever you are. It doesn’t matter what filter you use. It doesn’t matter how much makeup you wear, if you have a beautiful face underneath.”
“I just like to use stuff that really works.” he adds. So what exactly are these products? Keep reading to find out.
I’m really, really into using a good facial cleanser. I love my SkinMedica cleansing gel. I wash my face every day, sometimes twice a day if I’m filming and they’re doing my makeup. It’s really gentle, but it cleans the pores really well. I had an acne problem when I was younger and I also have bouts of it now, from time to time. So I have to keep my skin super clean and clear.
As soon as I get out of the shower, I like to use the SkinMedica TNS Serum. It’s really good, it gives the appearance of much firmer and smoother skin. It gets rid of wrinkles. And I think the overall texture is really nice. So I put this on and it has this firming effect and it lifts, which I really, really like.
Finally, I either used SkinMedica’s HA⁵, which is a very nice moisturizer, and I’m very faithful to it. It really hydrates and plumps up the skin. You know, if a balloon was a little deflated, and you just put in a little air and that smooths it out? It’s a bit like that. I feel like it has a nice plumping effect.
